A laboratory report records measurements produced by specific testing methods and units. Those numbers become useful only when they are considered alongside compatible target ranges, the crops you intend to grow, sample depth, soil conditions, and the size of the growing area.

Even when a laboratory provides a general nutrient recommendation, it may not identify an appropriate organic amendment, calculate the amount of that amendment for your actual garden or field, or account for the other nutrients and liming value the same amendment supplies.

Samples are demonstrations, not prescriptions. Do not copy their rates to another property. An actual plan requires a current soil test, the saved growing area, and documented amendment analyses or applicable specifications.

EVIDENCE BEHIND THE RECOMMENDATION

Soil-test indices require calibrated interpretation.

An extractable soil-test value is generally an index related to nutrient-supply status or probability of crop response—not a direct inventory of plant-available nutrient. QMA therefore does not universally subtract a reported value from a target and treat the difference as a physical nutrient deficit.

  1. Start with an applicable documented source. Interpretation functions are drawn from applicable published crop-response research, laboratory calibration guidance, and recognized soil-fertility recommendation systems.
  2. Match the laboratory method. An Olsen phosphorus result, for example, is evaluated against an Olsen-compatible target—not a target developed for a different extraction method. Units and reporting basis must also agree.
  3. Apply the crop and soil context. The supported interpretation and recommendation function are selected for the crop or intended use and relevant soil conditions. Crop-specific areas remain separate when their requirements differ.
  4. Declare the recommendation philosophy. Sufficiency, buildup, maintenance, and other recognized approaches can produce different recommendations from the same test result.

Calculation safeguards

Every recommendation follows a traceable calculation path. The original laboratory value, method, unit, qualifier, and sample depth are preserved. Required inputs are checked before calculation; unsupported or missing evidence is identified instead of silently estimated.

A documented calibration, crop-response, conversion, or liming function is applied; unsupported method–crop combinations do not produce calculated recommendations. The correction is scaled to the growing area and converted using the amendment’s documented product analysis, applicable specification, or neutralizing value.

Nutrients and liming value supplied by one amendment are credited before another natural amendment is added. Calculation details and limitations remain visible, allowing the recommendation to be traced and independently reviewed.

From nutrient need to amendment weight

A nutrient recommendation is not yet an amendment rate—or a complete amendment blend. QMA first determines the method-compatible nutrient and liming needs for the saved growing area. We then evaluate eligible amendments together, seeking an appropriate blend that supplies what is required without unnecessarily overshooting any one nutrient.

Worked example · 100 sq ft vegetable garden

Nutrient need: 0.30 lb K₂O. Documented amendment strength: 3% K₂O. Amendment equivalent: 10.0 lb wood ash.

The 10.0 lb of analyzed wood ash contributes 0.10 lb P₂O₅ and 4.30 lb lime-equivalent. Those amounts are subtracted before fish bone meal and calcitic lime are considered for the remaining phosphorus and liming needs, helping prevent the blend from overshooting either one.

This example depends on its own soil test, target, saved area, and documented amendment analyses. Its rates must not be copied to another property.
